Return to Sedona: Day Three

With the rains from California arriving in the afternoon, the sunrise was spectacular.

Day three of my return to Sedona was destined to be a short and lonely one. Rain was forecast to arrive in the afternoon and my friend Trey had to fly out of Phoenix that evening to return to work.

Fortunately, though the morning was cloudy, there was just enough of a clearing low on the eastern horizon to permit a bit of color on the clouds overhead.

I’ve photographed Courthouse Butte at sunrise before, but I keep coming back to it. It’s literally within walking distance of the hotel I stay in when visiting Sedona, so it makes an easy target for a sunrise location. The last time I photographed the butte, we had almost identical clouds, but less color. I guess this shows how small differences in position of the clouds on the horizon can make or break this scene.

As promised the rains did, indeed, arrive in the afternoon. This eliminated any hope of a sunset image, so I spent the time researching plans for a sunrise image the next morning. Those plans would quickly be destroyed by a pack of coyotes, but you’ll have to wait for next week’s blog post to learn more about that.
