Description
I love photographing the mist and fog over the James River in autumn. You never get the same conditions twice. The thickness of the fog, whether there is blue sky overhead or clouds, the colors in the trees, the height of water in the river, and whether there is any direct sunlight in the scene or not can all play a role in the characteristics of any particular morning. In the case of “Japanese Garden”, there was bright blue sky overhead, yet the sun had not risen enough to shine any light directly into the scene quite yet. This tinted the scene with the blue light from the sky overhead. The remnants of the autumn leaves still clinging to the trees added an additional bit of color to the scene. I’m particularly fond of the deep purple colors in the tree to the right.
There is a surprise in this print for anyone who cares to look closely enough: a Great Blue Heron stands on the island in the river just to the right of center. Its back is turned to the camera and I never noticed the bird at all as I was making this image, so well did it blend into the background colors. The print is named “Japanese Garden” as the scene in front of me that morning put me in mind of the famous Japanese Tea Gardens in San Fransisco.
