I really love photographing Great Blue Herons and other birds that fish in shallow waters at the edges of rivers and other bodies of water. When I can photograph Herons against a background of turbulent water, I like to use long exposures to blur the water. The birds can stand so still, that they are captured in perfect focus, while the water in the background creates a soft, cloud-like appearance. This image was created at the James River near downtown Richmond, Virginia during a period of moderately high water after a bit of rain. Dappled light on the background water, created by sunlight streaming through the leaves of a nearby tree, creates an uneven highlight and shadow pattern that seems to create a halo around the heron.
