Description
Dolly Sods in West Virginia is a unique location in that the flora and fauna is more likely to be found in sub-arctic Canada than it is in the United States. Red Spruce trees bent by the constant winds and Huckleberry or Blueberry bushes that don’t grow much taller than waist high due to the same winds, blanket the ground amongst exposed boulders that make hiking through the area difficult. For a few short weeks in early autumn, the leaves on the bushes turn the most amazing shade of red you’ve ever seen. You have to act quickly to catch the color, however, as freezing temperatures come early at 4000 feet altitude, and the fierce winds will strip the leaves off the bushes by mid-October.
