Description
I love photographing Great Blue Herons in the James River when the water level is higher than normal. In moderate flood stages, the Herons have to fish from the river banks rather than their normal positions in the middle of the river. This provides me with more opportunities to find areas of the river near the banks that can serve as backdrops against which to photograph these remarkable birds. They can stand so still while waiting for a fish to swim within striking distance, that I’m frequently able to utilize relatively long exposures to blur the motion of the river while capturing the bird in perfect focus. When the light also cooperates, in this case dappled light shining through nearby trees, magic results. The way the long exposure rendered the rushing water of the river put me in mind of clouds, which resulted in the title of the piece.
