I was hiking through the desert scenery a bit south of Sedona, Arizona on a cloudy afternoon, not certain if I would find anything of interest to photograph, when the clouds parted just enough to allow some sunlight to shine through the pine trees and spotlight a small group of Agave plants. I knew I’d found my composition. As the sun was moving in and out from behind the clouds the same spotlight effect never quite repeated, but I knew I could probably recreate the effect I originally witnessed by shooting several images as the sun lit up parts of the landscape and combining them later. I spent the better part of that afternoon waiting for bits of sunlight to brighten various parts of the scene in front of me. Time well spent, if you ask me.
