Another image from my recent trip down to Richmond and the James River, this one was taken from Pony Pasture park. The water level was elevated, thanks to recent rains, and many of the smaller rocks that normally appear in the river were underwater. The boulder to the left, however, was persevering against the current and helping to create a wonderful zig-zag shape in the flow of the river.
I had to experiment a bit with the exact shutter speed to best represent the flow of the water. Too slow, and the water blurred out so much, the zig-zag lost its contrast. Too fast, and the details of the current would overwhelm the zig-zag shape. In this particular case, 1/2 second was just right, as Goldilocks would say.
Taken with a Nikon D800 and a Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art lens. Exposure was 1/2 second @ f/16, ISO 200. This is a composite image made from 4 vertical images. The black-and-white conversion on each image was done using Adobe Lightroom and the composite was assembled using Adobe Photoshop.
