Potomac River Sunrise

Potomac River Sunrise, 12/12/15

The sun rises over the Potomac River on a cloudy morning, creating a dramatic scene

My new home near the Potomac River has its advantages, such as dramatic sunrises or moody, foggy mornings. I do have to admit, however, that I miss the James River near downtown Richmond, with its many rocks and rapids. The area of the Potomac where I live is boringly smooth and placid. I need to explore and find all the interesting locations, and I’m really looking forward to that. The opportunities for wildlife photography abound, and I’ll start doing some of that as well. On the morning of this sunrise, I encountered a couple of Coopers Hawks, Woodpeckers and Great Blue Herons, all without a long lens. Luck favors the prepared, and I wasn’t.

The above image was taken with a Nikon D800, a Nikkor 85mm lens, 1/100th sec. @ f/11, ISO 100. This is a collage of 8 horizontal images shot handheld, 2 rows of 4 images each. Assembled using Adobe’s Lightroom CC. I haven’t printed this one yet, but I think it’s a good candidate for some textured watercolor paper, either that or on metal.
